ONe sketch, two projects
Protect Living Soil is a two-part project comprised of a multicolor linocut print and a collaborative community project.

Preliminary sketch
Inspired by learnings from Be Love Farm and the creators of Kiss the Ground, I created a full-color sketch of a design using Procreate.

Community project
Deirdre Weinberg guided the group through a collaborative activity to transfer the design and fill it in. The finished piece is about 6′ high and 3.5′ wide.

limited run prints
I carved a linoleum slab. Pigment was rolled on using different color inks. I pulled full-color prints for members of my family. The prints vary slightly.

the community drew from reference
The sketch was printed on a large scale poster board. Deirdre gridded the print to match the size of the canvases. Participants chose a part of the scene. They then transferred the art on their own. The project used 81 canvases to make the completed piece.
What happened after the community painted
We later added water to bring out the vibrancy of the colors. We made slight adjustments to the linework to apply even pressure across the styles and make the shapes pop together. We then filled in the canvas edges to unify multiple styles into one continuous scene.
